Why is the Tax Return Deadline 20 January For Many?
The tax office is again ramping up its publicity on getting your return in on time. Get your return in and pay the tax by 31 January, or you will be fined.
All absolutely true. But what they are not saying is that many people needed to get their act together by 20 January or they will miss the cut-off. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s wrong with the VAT increase?
We’re enduring a rise in the standard rate of VAT to its highest level ever. Good and services are being hit with a 20% surcharge, paid directly to the government every time we buy most items. Never before have we paid so much on top of the value of something. Whatever the reason – bankers taking more than their fair share, plus some of ours as well or simply incompetent management of the economy by the government – we all have to put up with it.
How can it be then that we actually have below average VAT? Read the rest of this entry »

IXBRL – It’s coming, snow joke!
Our inaugural roadshow for accountants, live from the glamorous environs of Hollinwood Business Centre, took place on Tuesday, and despite the treacherous road conditions, a collection of plucky accountants braved the ice and snow to take part in a morning packed with useful information, and the launch of our iXBRL ready Corporation Tax and Accounts Production software. Her Majesty’s Revenue, Customs and National Lottery?
I read with interest a piece on accountingweb.co.uk by Rebecca Bennyworth where she tells of the talk around her dinner table at the recent Hardman lecture to the tax faculty of the ICAEW. (Sounds dull, it isn’t, really.)
The talk turned to how HMRC wanted to get returns filed earlier to avoid the bottle-neck problems in January.
Rebecca’s article lead to a long set of comments about how we (I’m talking as an accountant here) and the Revenue could get tax returns in more quickly. Great discussion, so I thought I’d share some of the best points, and also add some ideas of my own.

Phew, what a relief!
At a guess, how many tax reliefs would you say there are in the UK? A hundred; twenty? Five hundred even?
I did a quick straw-poll and the average was over a hundred. Which in itself is quite a lot, but nothing like the right number.

Straight from the horse’s mouth
You’ve all heard about iXBRL. It’s been likened to the Y2K bug. It’s caused consternation in chat-rooms and friction on forums. It’s going to bring practices to a standstill. The accounting world will crumble and fall like an ancient empire…
But will it?

The death of the cheque and new ways to pay
Cheques have been available in the UK for 350 years, but are to be phased out by October 2018 by the Payments Council, in a move that will save the banking industry nearly £600 million a year.
Cheques have fallen out of favour in recent years, with use of the traditional payment method declining by 40% since 2004. Many leading retailers have also stopped accepting cheques as credit and debit cards have grown in popularity.
Whether you are an individual or a business, you need to have a think about how you will replace your use of cheques in future.
